The Home Remote supports many devices and previously all were controlled using data types & commands that correspond directly with the manufacturer's API. These manufacturers don't follow a universal standard when it comes to turning on a light for example. For some that meant setting a variable to "0" or "1" & for others it meant setting a variable to "true" or "false." Capabilities provide the means for all Home Remote supported devices to talk the same language. Now any light can be turned on or off using the same core set of values. And for lights, that just so happens to be "On" & "Off" which is handled by the Switch capability & its Switch variable.
